Custom Day to Rose Island

If you’re staying in Nassau at a resort, my number one recommendation is to go to Rose Island. This is easily my favorite place around islands of New Providence! You can book a tour to Sandy Toes (the OG Rose Island Beach Bar) and although this will get you to Rose Islands beautiful waters, it will feel more touristy since you are shuttled with 40-80 other cruise and resort tourists. This isn’t a bad choice and is a little more economical, but for a more private and magical day of memories, find a private captain to take you to Rose Island with many amazing experiences on the way! I’d recommend Reel Dreams Charters (ask for Justin if possible) and tell them exactly what you want to do. He’s a fishing god but will happily take you to the best Rose Island spots based on your personal interests if you tell him. See more details below.

Located just 3 to 5 miles northeast of Nassau, Rose Island is an 11-mile-long stretch of paradise with no roads. Skip the massive commercial catamarans and book a customizable private half-day charter on a local skiff or center-console out of Montagu Beach or Bayshore Marina.

  • The Uncharted Route: Have your captain bypass the populated tourist beach clubs on the west end. Instead, go a little further and drop anchor down the coast of Rose Island on the uninhabited sandbanks or hidden coves along the north shore. This is easily my favorite spot around Nassau with multiple beach bar options that meet a variety of styles. My favorite is Footprints for a true beach bar feel where you feel like your rubbing elbows with the locals.
  • Don’t Miss Sandy Cay: On the way out, cruise past Sandy Cay (famously known as Gilligan’s Island and featured in the classic James Bond film Thunderball). Its lonely palm trees and shifting shallow sandbars make it an incredible spot to hop off the bow and explore on foot.
  • World-class Snorkeling: If you still have energy, ask your captain to finish out the day with some amazing snorkeling. Choose your spot carefully as boat traffic and shark feeding has increased in this area as it has become more popular for tourist excursions.
